Molecular phylogenetic evidence for the evolution of specialization in anemone®shes

چکیده
Anemone¢shes (genera: Amphiprion and Premnas; family Pomacentridae) are a group of 28 species of coral reef ¢shes that are found in obligate symbiosis with large tropical sea anemones. A phylogenetic hypothesis based on morphological analyses of this group suggests that the ancestral anemone¢sh was a generalist with similar morphology to other pomacentrids, and that it gave rise to other anemone¢sh species that were more specialized for living with particular species of host anemones. To test this hypothesis we constructed a molecular phylogeny for the anemone¢shes by sequencing 1140 base pairs of the cytochrome b gene and 522 base pairs of the 16S rRNA gene for six species of anemone¢shes (representatives of all subgenera and species complexes) and two other pomacentrid species. Three methods of phylogenetic analysis all strongly supported the conclusion that anemone¢shes are a monophyletic group. The molecular phylogeny di¡ers from the tree based on morphological data in that the two species of specialized anemone¢shes (Premnas biaculeatus and Amphiprion ocellaris) were assigned to a basal position within the clade, and the extreme host generalist (Amphiprion clarkii) to a more derived position. Thus, the initial anemone¢sh ancestors were probably host specialists and subsequent speciation events led to a combination of generalist and specialist groups. Further phylogenetic studies of additional anemone¢sh species are required to substantiate this hypothesis.

متن کاملEvolution of viruses and cells: do we need a fourth domain of life to explain the origin of eukaryotes?
The recent discovery of diverse very large viruses, such as the mimivirus, has fostered a profusion of hypotheses positing that these viruses define a new domain of life together with the three cellular ones (Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya). It has also been speculated that they have played a key role in the origin of eukaryotes as donors of important genes or even as the structures at the origi...
متن کاملRe-assessment of subspecific taxa in Astragalus section Anthylloidei (Fabaceae) based on molecular evidence
The taxonomic and phylogenetic status of several taxa previously recognized as subspecies inAstragalus sect. Anthylloidei is re-assessed based on DNA sequences and morphologicalfeatures. We focused on Astragalus ebenoides (subsp. ebenoides and subsp. naghadehensis),Astragalus murinus (subsp. murins and subsp. bornmuelleri), Astragalus remotiflorus (subsp.remotiflorus and subsp. melanogramma), A...

In the current study, phylogenetic analysis and molecular evolution of the mammalian’s Leptin was investigated. Data was achieved and aligned by searching its genome database, while all examined mammals contained only a single copy of the Leptin. The nucleotide substitution rate of the sequences and molecular evolution of the Leptin were calculated by maximum likelihood and neighbor-joinin...
متن کاملA Perfect Specialization Model for Gravity Equation in Bilateral Trade based on Production Structure
Although initially originated as a totally empirical relationship to explain the volume of trade between two partners, gravity equation has been the focus of several theoretic models that try to explain it. Specialization models are of great importance in providing a solid theoretic ground for gravity equation in bilateral trade. Some research papers try to improve specialization models by addi...
